Good Morning All !!
Autumn is in the air, and the mornings are cooler and crisper.
There is an extra kick in everyone’s step out at the Serengeti
Mustang Sanctuary in SW Colorado. Running around in their herds,
full of piss and vinegar, and acting like you’d expect a wild mustang
should. Plus all of the mustangs are looking good, bulking up a bit
for winter.
We also have a new arrival – Kreacher is a stallion who ‘escaped’ from
the 25,000 Colorado BLM Spring Creek Herd Area. The BLM gathered
him up and brought him to their holding facility in Canon City, CO.
We followed his movements, and on his first day of availability, we
were there to buy him. He’s still a bit thin, having lost a great deal of
weight while in holding pens at Canon City. He’s the white fella
in the first couple pictures. (you can also see his new BLM Brand running
down his neck in the first pic)
OK! In the coming days, we will be putting final touches on our first
ever visitors center!! Will be a 640sqft unit, skimmed in rusted metal
with a nice deck, overlooking most of the sanctuary. Among other guests,
we hope to bring in students from SW Colorado, to teach them about
the mustangs of the area: their beauty, their heritage, plus the pressures
that are always on them. Perhaps one day you will see it as well !!
October also brings in hunting season….. This can always be a bit
stressful, given the truly remote location of the sanctuary. Plenty of
people poking around, wondering how they can regain access to
their old hunting turf down in Disappointment Creek. Every year
we seem to see more elk and deer hunkered down in our creek bottom,
and this year is no exception. We talk to them…. reminding them to
stay put!
The habitat provided by the creek bottom is incredible, stretching
almost nine miles when following the water. Every year we see the
wildlife populations expand, from birds of prey to the smallest and
largest of mammals.
In closing, please enjoy some of the latest pics. You can see the sense
of freedom the horses feel as they run across our 3700 acres. To give these
wild born mustangs THAT feeling again, is why we built the sanctuary.
And to our supporters and to friends and family,
we Thank You for helping us make it such a special place.
Have a Terrific Week Y’all !!
